Editorial: Folk Fest returns for another weekend of music, food, fun
The 37th edition of the Lowell Folk Festival returns this weekend, with a complete menu of music, food, and craft attractions that festivalgoers have come to expect.
Preparation for this annual mega event began literally a few days after the previous Folk Fest concluded.
The region’s signature cultural event since 1987, organizers expect to welcome as many as 150,000 visitors to this year’s three-day affair, which begins Friday night at 6:15 with the Parade of Nations from City Hall to Boarding House Park.
This free festival, the longest-running event of its kind in the United States, will feature 20 performers on four stages, more than a dozen food vendors, numerous exhibits, dance tents and a variety of distinctive cultural experiences.
Like the various cuisines from around the world that’s sure to satisfy every palate, the musical acts also represent a cross-section of tastes.
“It’s a balancing act of the type of music that’s played and who is available; you want to be representative of everyone in the community,” Festival Director Lee Viliesis said.
