The Lowell Folk Festival announced the latest roun

The Lowell Folk Festival announced the latest round of talented musicians from across the country that will grace four stages during the 2022 Lowell Folk Festival. Celebrating its 35th Anniversary July 29-31, the 2022 Lowell Folk Festival promises to continue its rich history of showcasing a diverse mix of musical styles from regions across the country. The eclectic group includes Grammy winning Polka artists, masters of Memphis Soul, and a Creole party that will have everyone dancing.

The additional artists include:

Balla Kouyaté & Famoro Dioubaté (Boston) Balafon Masters

Christine Tassan et les Imposteures (Quebec) Jazz Manouche and Swing

Don Bryant (Memphis) Memphis Soul

Lenny Gomulka & Chicago Push (Ludlow, MA) Polka

Panfilo’s Güera (San Antonio, TX) Tejano Conjunto Fiddle

Tremé Brass Band (New Orleans, LA) New Orleans Brass Band

Cedric Watson & Bijou Creole (Lafayette, LA) Creole Music

These talented group of musicians join a 2022 lineup that also includes: Cherish the Ladies (Irish), Los Pleneros de la 21 (Bomba and Plena), Dale Ann Bradley (Bluegrass), Diunna Greenleaf & Blue Mercy (Blues), Nava Persian Trio (Persian Santour), The Pedro Giraudo Tango Ensemble (Argentine Tango).

Festival organizers are excited to bring back this staple cultural event, marking a new chapter in the region’s recovery from the pandemic. Festival-favorite nonprofit ethnic food vendors will also make a comeback this year. A dozen master craftspeople and local chefs will be featured in the Folk Craft & Foodways Area.

The Lowell Folk Festival is produced by the Lowell Festival Foundation, @likelowellma, @lowellnps, @ncta_usa, the @greaterlowellchamber, and @merrimackvalley.

David Lonebear Sanipass is a Mi’kmaq Native Amer

David Lonebear Sanipass is a Mi’kmaq Native American Artist, Storyteller, Speaker, and Star Teachings Archivist coming to Lowell Folk Festival July 29-31!

"My name is David Sanipass. I am Mi’kmaq. I have been making and playing Native American flutes for over 30 years. My Grandfather taught me how to carve flutes at the age of nine. As a child, I would sit with him for hours to watch and ask questions about the art of flute carving. It can take from 5 to 20 hours to carve a flute. I harvest all the wood and make many of the tools myself. I do not use any power machinery. I use mostly lightning struck White Cedar. Once the Cedar Tree is struck by lightning, the wood crystallizes. It is this result that gives the finished flute a unique sound and tone. I also make a "sweetgrass" flute. This is traditionally a Grandmother's or woman's flute. While this flute is played, the player as well as the listener is soothed by the light fragrance of "sweetgrass" with each note."

The Harmonizing Stars of Boston, African American a cappella gospel quartet singing from Boston coming to Lowell Folk Festival July 29-31, 2022! When the Harmonizing Stars of Boston first started singing a half-century ago, the teenage members would practice their golden harmonies while taking the bus from one church engagement to another. Today the members of this family group are old enough to drive, but their commitment to bringing a cappella gospel to both secular and sacred spaces remains as strong as ever.

Musique à Bouches coming to Lowell Folk Festival! July 29-31, 2022!

Québécois vocal quintet Musique à Bouches are self-described musical archaeologists—driven by a passion to unearth, polish, and give new life to old, all-but forgotten ancestral songs of French Canada. Featuring a broad repertoire of folk and choral music dating back as far as pre-colonial France, the group’s sophisticated, five-part acapella arrangements add fresh dimension to ancient songs whose stories and characters form the bedrock of Quebecois lore. Whether singing boisterous drinking songs, cheeky sailor ditties, or plaintive songs of love, Musique à Bouches’s gorgeous vocal harmonies paired with their warm camaraderie are sure to inspire joy in any listener.

Learn more about guitars & traditional Puerto Rican stringed Instruments from William Cumpiano. After completing his guitarmaking apprenticeship with Michael Gurian in the early 1970s, William Cumpiano opened his own studio in Western Massachusetts. Since then, he has created hundreds of individually crafted guitars and other stringed instruments in the European, North American, and Latin American traditions, and taught the craft to scores of aspiring makers. Lowell Folk Festival is coming up July 29-31, 2022!

Discover how a range of acoustic musical instruments are made at Lowell Folk Festival. July 29th-31st! Before dedicating herself full-time to bowmaking, Mariia Gorkun apprenticed with the late Eduard Kobyliansky, one of the most celebrated violinmakers in Ukraine, and trained as a professional violinist, performing several seasons with the National Opera of Ukraine in Kyiv.
