Lowell, MA December 8, 2015- National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Chairman Jane Chu announced today that The Lowell Festival Foundation is one of a group of select nonprofit organizations nationwide to receive an NEA Art Works grant. The Lowell Festival Foundation is recommended for a $35,000 grant to support the 30th Anniversary Lowell Folk Festival in 2016.
This Grant represents a $5,000 increase over the Grant received for the 2015 Lowell Folk Festival. The Art Works grants support the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence, public engagement with diverse and excellent art, lifelong learning in the arts, and the strengthening of communities through the arts.
The longest running “FREE” folk festival in the nation, with continuous music on five outdoor stages, is slated to take place on July 29 – 31, 2016 in historic downtown Lowell, Massachusetts. A family friendly event, the Lowell Folk Festival has presented an international array of traditional folk music, ethnic foods, folk craft demonstrations, craft artisans, and children’s activities to enthusiastic regional, national, and international audiences for the past 29 years!
NEA Chairman Chu said, “I am pleased to be able to share the news of our support through Art Works including the award to the Lowell Festival Foundation. The arts foster value, creativity, and innovation for the American people and these recommended grants demonstrate those attributes and affirm that the arts are part of our everyday lives.”
Craig Gates, the Executive Director of the Lowell Festival Foundation, was “thrilled and extremely honored that the National Endowment for the Arts saw fit to choose the Lowell Folk Festival, again as one of the 2016 grant recipients. The fact that the NEA is awarding us $35,000 shows how much the Lowell Folk Festival is revered in this country! It is a great success story in that it has lasted for almost 30 years and has been able to keep admission “FREE” for the three day cultural event! This award represents a great start as we have already begun planning to make the 30th Anniversary Festival the best one yet! We are hoping all of our past sponsors and donors will follow the NEA’s lead and increase their support as we celebrate this milestone in 2016! The NEA has so many outstanding applicants that apply, I am just so excited and proud that they have chosen to support the Festival again!”
The Lowell Folk Festival is presented by Lowell National Historical Park, Lowell Festival Foundation, The National Council for the Traditional Arts, The City of Lowell, the Greater Merrimack Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the Greater Lowell Chamber of Commerce.
